Kowa 6 vs Hasselblad 500C
This year I shot a comparison video of the Kowa 6 and the Hasselblad 500c. Since the Kowa 6 rolled out as a cheaper alternative to the Hasselblad system, I wanted to see firsthand if the Kowa 6 could give the famous Hasselblad 500c a run for its money.
Naturally, I shot portraits with these cameras as I believe this is where they both shine the most, given the quality glass that accompanies each system.
I set the stage by shooting one model at the same location with both cameras. This way, I'd be able to compare the photographs taken in similar situations.
Here's my behind-the-scenes comparison video:
Now, I realize there's only so much you can discern from a video when comparing cameras. Most people often want a closer look at the images. Below, you'll find the photos taken during the photoshoot.

I tend to wait a month or several after I put cameras up against each other to allow my opinions to percolate over time. I've found hindsight to be a vantage point I quite enjoy in all things.
To hear my full breakdown of both cameras during this head-to-head, check out my reaction video below.
My takeaway from this battle is that the Kowa 6 is a fantastic gateway medium format camera. I'd have considered buying this camera if I'd known about this system when I was getting into medium format film photography. Of course, I'd have even paid more to ensure the camera was in good shape, given the troubles I ran into while shooting the one I borrowed for a few videos.
Unfortunately, inflation is killer at the moment, and the bargain Kowa 6 is going up in price. I remain hopeful the costs will drop in the future and that consumers will again be able to buy this camera without breaking the bank.
That's all for this head-to-head battle. In the end, my winner is the Hasselblad 500c. However, learning more about the Kowa 6 was a win of its own.
